“We purchased our house on the banks of the Thames River in Gales Ferry to be next to the water where we could live with our family and enjoy boating” For several years we owned a 23′ Walk Around fishing boat with an outboard motor. Located in Gales Ferry we were quickly able to cruise north to Norwich (Brown Park) to stroll the city streets and enjoy restaurants and pubs. We often cruised south to New London to enjoy the sights, restaurants, and city activities like Sail Fest and the annual fireworks. The Thames River is tidal and with its connection to the LI Sound, the Atlantic Ocean is our playground. At the end of boating day it was so easy and convenient to motor back to our private dock, tie up the boat, and walk into our beautiful home. We were particularly attracted to this property due to its flat contour which supported the placement of the 3 car garage with adjoining driveway leaving a significant portion of the yard available for family gatherings, picnics, lawn parties and in our case graduation receptions. The deck was placed with a commanding view of one of the widest, most rural areas of the Thames. Glass railings permit unobstructed views. Between the open architecture of the downstairs and its connection to the same level deck, it is the perfect area to entertain large groups of friends, family or co-workers. The garage with its fiberglass reinforced smooth finish is idea for the car enthusiasts. Built-in workbench, ample florescent lighting, 100 amps of 240 VAC power enable any hobby to be accomplished in this space. Upstairs in the garage is a full access unfinished “bonus” loft with lights, power, and cable TV installed. Storage, hobby shop, workout room, or kids playroom, there are endless opportunities to make this space your own. Gales Ferry and Ledyard CT have several civic organizations to support just about any lifestyle.
Waking up in this house and opening the curtains to see the river is truly a heartwarming and scenic “daily event”. The beauty of the river with its sea birds, birds of prey including ospreys and bald eagles is amazing. We have even seen harbor seals in the area! During the summer and fall there are fishermen trying their luck with the stripers and blues often seen “boiling” in large schools right off our dock. Early mornings you can spot the Harvard and Yale regatta rowing teams practicing for the annual race in June. We have lived in Gales Ferry for over 30 years and enjoyed every minute of it.
